[Event Recap] Owner Engagement program Mid-Year Summit

First Ever Mid-Year Summit: Eleven Leaders Meet to Collaborate

On July 11-12, 2019, the Exit Planning Institute hosted members of the Owner Engagement program for the first annual Owner Engagement Mid-Year Summit in Cleveland, OH.

This gathering served as an opportunity for the group to gather face-to-face, supplementing their monthly virtual gatherings, for collaboration, idea sharing, and the development of best practices for the expansion of owner education through the OwnerRoundtable™ workshop series.

Sessions and panel discussions were led by CEPAs on topics that included: Working with Business Owners Remotely, How to Build a Powerful Network, 90-Day ORT Launch Lessons Learned and Collaboration with M&A Firms.

Everyone also participated in a ‘One Killer Idea’ Shark Tank-style competition where some valuable new ideas where shared and voted on by the group (with the winner taking home $1,400). This competition, along with the other feedback provided, has led to the creation of a ‘Best Practices’ list and provided clear direction on future content releases and support strategies for members of this program. It wasn’t all business though, as Wes Shelton, CEPA, CM&AA, and Dan Smith, CM&AA, of SM2 Advisors hosted a private bourbon tasting event with several limited-release, sought-after spirits from Kentucky prior to dinner on the first day.

As one attendee put it, “It was a great couple of days. I really enjoyed meeting all of you. And I learned A LOT from you guys. A lot of talent in the room. It amazed me how willing everyone is willing to share. I really like this group.”

The group will meet again in San Antonio in September, prior to the start of the Exit Planning Summit, as we look to continue to #ChangeTheOutcome for business owners.

“This Methodology is Going to Supercharge My Practice!” -Justin Goodbread, CEPA, CFP®

Official ‘Exit Planning’ Definition: Exit planning combines the plan, concept, effort, and process into a clear, simple strategy to build a business that is transferable through strong human, structural, customer, and social capital. The future of the business owner, his/her family, and the business itself are addressed by exit planning through creating value today.

Exit planning is not just a plan (or a keyed-in report to print out for an owner). It is a strategy rooted in execution that grows value while expanding options so that an owner can transition the business on his/her terms when they are ready. It aligns the business, personal, and financial needs of the owner. Good exit planning utilizes the Value Acceleration Methodology™ to move clients through discovery, prepare, and decide gates. Certified Exit Planning Advisors (CEPA) educate the owner on all of the exit options and enters an engagement with an exit-option-agnostic perspective as to truly serve the business owner’s diverse needs. CEPAs collaborate with a seasoned, multi-disciplinary team of professionals to support the success of the business owner and use each other’s specialties and expertise to the benefit of the project.
