It’s Time to Give Back: Incorporating Charitable Intent in Your Exit Plan

Written by Colleen Kowalski | Nov 29, 2022 5:00:00 AM

GivingTuesday was created in 2012 to encourage people to do good in their everyday lives. In 2020, 34.8 million people participated in GivingTuesday, this is a 29% increase over 2019 numbers. Additionally, in the 24 hours of GivingTuesday in 2020, over $2.47 billion was donated in the United States alone!

As we celebrate GivingTuesday this year, we thought we would share how incorporating a charitable giving plan benefits you and your business.

What is Charitable Intent?

In CEPA, we teach that charitable intent conversations benefit family businesses especially because it allows them to develop an emotional and functional bridge between wealth, purpose, and society. Before exiting your company, consider what causes are important to you and your family. How would you like to support them? Decide, as a family, on what causes to support financially or through volunteering time. That way, not only will your assets be passed down to the next generation, but your values as well.

As Joe Strazzeri, Co-Founder and Principal of Southern Carolina Institute and Partner of Strazzeri Mancini, LLP, teaches in our Certified Exit Planning Advisor program, 66% of owners are interested in learning about at least one topic that pertains to philanthropy, charitable trusts, socially responsible investing, or strategic giving plans. Charitable discussions with business owners can help ascertain some of the attitudes and values that may be preventing an exit strategy. But as an owner’s valued advisor, you can build trust through charitable giving conversations.

A Focus on Philanthropy

Use this GivingTuesday to look into your charitable giving plans. According to Neon One and GivingTuesday, 82% of participating organizations use GivingTuesday to experiment or try something new in their philanthropic strategies. You can begin implementing a donation matching program in your organization, use the day to donate your company’s time by volunteering at a local charity with your team or map out your charitable intent in your estate plan. There is no wrong way to donate your time, money, or resources to those organizations or individuals in need.

The Exit Planning Summit Charity Giveback

EPI is thrilled to announce the return of the Charity Giveback Social at The Exit Planning Summit! We are excited to welcome hundreds of exit planning professionals from Sunday, May 21 – Tuesday, May 23, 2023, to Scottsdale, Arizona for a conference where top advisors and their teams come to build deep relationships, advance their skillset and knowledge, and share best practices.

During each Exit Planning Summit, EPI and our Charitable Giveback Partner select a charity to financially support. This year, our Silver Partner, The Founders Group will serve as our Charitable Giveback partner.

In the past five Exit Planning Summits, the Exit Planning Institute and its attendees have raised over $167,000 for five different charitable organizations in four different cities. This year, we will again sponsor a charitable organization during our Summit.
