Top Books and Resources for Certified Exit Planning Advisors
by Kellie Nock on October 14, 2025

As a professional advisor, you understand that continuous and lifelong learning strengthens your practice and your relationships with business owner clients. Investing time, money, and resources into lifelong learning doesn’t only mean attending conferences, gaining new certifications, or taking new courses. It also means engaging in thought leadership from authorities in the exit planning space, including taking advantage of books and resources created by industry experts.
Books are a great avenue for learning new ideas and concepts in exit planning and the Value Acceleration Methodology™. Other resources, like the ones the Exit Planning Institute® (EPI) provides, are great tools to add to your exit planning arsenal.
What Are Exit Planning Books?
Books are a low cost, high-impact way to expand your exit planning expertise. Helpfully, many of our thought leaders and industry experts in the EPI community have authored books on a variety of topics relevant to Value Acceleration and exit planning. These include books such as:
- Walking to Destiny: 11 Actions an Owner Must Take to Rapidly Grow Value & Unlock Wealth by EPI CEO Christopher Snider
- Motive: Meet the Invisible Guest in your wealth-biased relationships by EPI Thought Leadership Council Member Joe Strazzeri, Esq.
- Finish Strong by Cornerstone’s Scott Bushkie
- Ready to Rise by 2025 Thought Leader of the Year Renee Russo
- Exitology by EPI Denver Chapter President Wally Waldron
- Your Baby’s Ugly by EPI Thought Leadership Council Member Justin Goodbread
And many more not listed here. These books cover a wide range of topics such as personal planning, leadership, retirement, culture, family business, and more. Check out our other recommended reads to find your next page-turner.
What is Walking to Destiny?
Central to EPI’s existence is the handbook for Value Acceleration – Walking to Destiny: 11 Actions an Owner Must Take to Rapidly Grow Value & Unlock Wealth. This foundational, framework text, authored by EPI CEO Christopher Snider, not only provides the guideline of what an attractive, transferable business is, but also provides the business owner with the steps to get there. For owners, their business is their most valuable asset. Walking to Destiny enables them to harvest the most out of it when it comes time to exit.
In it, Christopher emphasizes the goal of the book. “This book is designed to give you the knowledge of Value Acceleration and exit planning necessary to take deliberate and intentional steps on your walk to destiny,” he writes. “I want you to unlock the wealth trapped in your business prior to your imminent exit and create the future and legacy you deserve. It is your destiny to grow the value of your most significant asset, harvest those riches, and enter the best act of your life.”
Upgrade Your Client Relationship
Certified Exit Planning Advisors (CEPA®) are uniquely equipped to bolster their client relationships, especially with the insights that exit planning thought leaders can provide. These thought leaders include Joe Strazzeri, a member of the EPI Thought Leadership Council and a contributor to the first edition of the Annual Exit.
In his latest book, Motive, with the help of Jennifer Summer Tolman, Joe describes the “invisible guest in your wealth-biased relationships” and provides meaningful insight on relational vetting and the concept of “Care to Know.”
According to Joe, enhance your relationships by dedicating yourself to Othership and reaching beyond technical expertise.
“When two people are drawn to be in a relationship, everyone’s walls come down. Safety invites your own clarity to take a significantly deeper dive. It invites the advisors’ technical potential to reach equal depth,” Joe writes. “Each of you is more interested in hearing the other person’s viewpoint than your own. Listening deepens for everyone at the table. Collaborative innovation reveals new and otherwise undiscoverable truths. Sounds pretty outcome-driven to me.”
Motive encourages personal interaction with the material, including audio overviews and thinking exercises that go beyond reading the text and provide a full experience that any reader would find valuable. Be among the first to read it here!
