A Field Guide for Activating Your Certified Exit Planning Advisor Credential
by Rob DiFranco on October 15, 2026

Earning the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA®) credential provides advisors with a strong foundation in the Value Acceleration Methodology™ and a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges that business owners face.
The next step for advisors is to put that knowledge into action in ways that fit their practice. That is where Zac Jennings, CEPA, founder of Southern Exits, sees an opportunity to support fellow advisors with a practical field guide focused on activation.
Designed for financial advisors seeking to serve business owners, the field guide complements the education, tools, and community already available from the Exit Planning Institute® (EPI).
According to Zac, it offers a simple, repeatable way to apply Value Acceleration in real client conversations.
Shifting the Advisor Mindset
At Southern Exits, Zac focuses on helping business owners prepare for an eventual exit years before they plan to sell.
As he’s connected with other advisors over the years of working with business owners, Zac has found that many are energized by the opportunity to work with owners and help them think more proactively about their futures.
Advisors recognized the value of the CEPA credential and the Value Acceleration Methodology, but some sought additional ways to translate these concepts into a consistent process for their practices.
“The mindset shift is that you have to take ownership of it,” Zac says. “Any framework or system, when you are implementing it in your business, you have to take what is there and start writing it out in a way that you feel comfortable communicating with business owners.”
The field guide is intended to make that transition feel more manageable by identifying practical first steps and providing tools that advisors can adapt to their approach.
Understanding a Business Owner’s Current Situation
Advisors do not need to begin with a complex engagement or have all the answers before opening an exit-planning conversation. Zac believes an effective first discussion with a business owner can start with two straightforward questions:
- What are you trying to accomplish?
- Do you know where you stand today?
These questions provide owners with an opportunity to step back from their day-to-day operations and reflect on their personal, financial, and business goals. Stepping back also helps the owner and advisor determine whether they have a clear vision for the future, understand the company’s current strengths and risks, and have a plan to align business value with personal financial needs.
Zac adds that helping an owner view their standing in the business from an outside perspective is a great first step for advisors that can lead directly to a Triggering Event and Value Acceleration.
“When I show results to business owners, nine times out of 10, they say, ‘I’ve never seen my business this way,’” he says. “They can see what they need to do now.”
That clarity does not require an advisor to solve every issue right away. Instead, it can help an advisor identify the next most useful conversation or resource for the owner.
Lead with Trust
For Zac, trust is central to successful business-owner relationships. That often begins with authenticity and a willingness to lead with value.
“It is connection before content,” he says. “You have to show up authentic, genuine, and real.”
In practice, the first step could be a brief assessment that helps an owner view their company from a new perspective. This first meeting helps advisors identify initial opportunities for Value Acceleration, risk reduction, and improvement of the Three Legs of the Stool – Personal, Business, and Financial.
