Top 5 Professional Development Tips for CEPAs
by Rob DiFranco on January 15, 2026

As a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA®), your professional development plan can be the difference between a transactional practice and a true value-creation firm.
These five tips will help you build skills, relationships, and resources that directly improve outcomes for the owners you serve.
1. Set Realistic Goals
To get yourself started on your professional development journey, it’s important to set goals that you’ll actually be able to achieve. While it might be nice to shoot for the stars, sometimes you have to be realistic about what you will be able to get done while also balancing the rest of your work with business owner clients, and, of course, your own personal life.
Consult our blog on setting goals that will stick in the new year to get an idea of what a realistic goal looks like. It’s also a good idea to incorporate some of the teachings from the Value Acceleration Methodology™ into your goal setting by checking in with yourself every 90 days to assess your progress.
It’s always good practice to live what you teach to your business owner clients.
2. Make your Growth Purposeful
At the Exit Planning Institute® (EPI), we live by our core values, including purposeful growth. What exactly does that mean? It means that we are committed to continuous learning and development to achieve both professional and personal growth.
However, it also means that we are intentional about how we grow and develop. For example, instead of taking a course just for the sake of earning the continuing education credits you need to maintain your designation, pick out one or several EPI Academy courses that are meaningful to you.
You are more likely to retain what you learned in that course if it’s something that will truly impact the way you do business and help your clients.
3. Know What to Read
Reading is an excellent way to acquire new strategies and habits that can tangibly enhance your exit planning practice.
Consider starting by revisiting Walking to Destiny, by Exit Planning Institute Chairman Christopher Snider. Even if you’ve already read through it once, the start of the new year is a great time to give it another read to refamiliarize yourself with the principles of exit planning.
If you’re looking for more books on the topic of exit planning, check out our blog “Top Books and Resources for Certified Exit Planning Advisors”, where we highlight books from thought leaders in the EPI community, like Justin Goodbread, Joe Strazzeri, Esq., Renee Russo, and others.
4. Make Connections and Build a Referral Network
The old saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” might not be 100% correct, but there is some truth to it.
While it does matter a lot what you know, it does help to know the right people who might be able to connect you with new clients or new opportunities to expand your knowledge. Building a referral network is an integral part of growing your CEPA practice, whether you are a new advisor or a seasoned professional in the field.
Events hosted by your local EPI Chapters are great places to build this kind of network. Or, if you don’t have a chapter near you, join an EPI webinar or CEPA Think Tank online to connect with other CEPAs from around the country.
5. The Exit Planning Summit
EPI’s annual gathering of exit planning professionals, the Exit Planning Summit, is the perfect place to get all sorts of professional development in one spot. The Exit Planning Summit provides numerous networking opportunities, hands-on workshops, and the chance to hear from panels of expert exit planning professionals, among other benefits.
Whether you want to become more well-versed in tax planning, learn how to unlock the full potential of the triggering event, or refocus yourself on personal planning, the Exit Planning Summit has something for you.
